The best posture is the next posture

Perfect posture does not exist. The research is clear: there is no single perfect way to sit. The problem is not how you sit — it is how long you sit in the same position. The aim of this reset is simple: change your shape every hour.

The 60-second reset

1. Sit tall and take 3 slow breaths through the nose, letting the ribs expand sideways.

2. Roll the shoulders backwards 5 times, then gently squeeze the shoulder blades together for 5 seconds.

3. Chin tucks — draw the chin straight back (not down) 10 times to decompress the neck.

4. Thoracic extension — interlace fingers behind the head and gently arch the upper back over the chair 5 times.

5. Stand, reach overhead, and walk 10 steps before sitting again.

Why this works

These movements counter the three forces that build up during desk work: forward head posture, rounded shoulders and a flexed upper back. Performed every hour, the reset prevents the slow accumulation of tension that becomes neck pain, headaches and shoulder stiffness by the end of the day.

Key takeaways

  • There is no perfect posture — variety is the goal.
  • A 60-second reset every hour outperforms a 60-minute gym session at the end of the day.
  • Persistent neck pain or headaches warrant a physiotherapy assessment.
